Chemistry Expectations

Sr. M. Raphaele, FSGM

 1.         Students will be on time for class (in the room and at desk) and in proper dress code.  Failure to comply will result in appropriate school detention.

2.         Students will be expected to have textbooks covered at all times.  Failure will result in teacher detention.

3.         Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class on the next school day, unless otherwise specified.  Late assignments will have the grade earned reduced by the following schedule:

                        Time late                                                          Percent deducted

After the beginning of class – 1 day                   10 %

                        2-4 days                                                           20 %

                        5-9 days                                                           30%

Homework received after the corrected work has been returned to students                         will receive at the most 30% of the grade earned. Students who are absent will be                         expected to follow the school policy for making up missing work. .(extended                         absences are excluded)

4.         Lab reports are due at the beginning of class of the day following the completion of the lab.  Students are expected to share all necessary data obtained in the lab during the lab time.  Late lab reports will be subjected to the above schedule. If a student misses a lab, they will have 2 weeks to make up the lab experiment. After that, they will be given a writing assignment in lieu of the lab.  Lab experiments must be made up outside of class time.

5.         While groups work is encouraged, this does NOT mean copying another’s homework and/or lab report.  Students caught copying work and the student who allowed their work to be copied will receive a “0” on that assignment, and parents will be notified.

6.         Anyone caught cheating during a test will be given a “0” on that test, will NOT be allowed to retake the test, and parents will be notified.

7.         Students are expected to bring the necessary supplies to class, including paper, pencil/pens, textbook and calculator when needed. If a calculator is needed for a test, and a student fails to bring theirs, they will be expected to take the test without the calculator.

8.         All homework assignments will be posted on the Alleman web site. This includes test days and scheduled lab experiments.

9.         Students who are absent for a test, will be given a different form of the test and must make up the test outside of class time.

Chemistry Grades

  1. Homework assignments (all types) points will vary depending on length of assignment. While the assignment will be graded within 24 hours, the work will not be returned until the day before the test on that chapter or section.
  2. All lab reports are worth 50 points each, unless otherwise specified. There will be an average of 5-6 lab experiments per quarter.
  3. All tests are 100 points each, unless noted. There will be an average of 3-5 tests per quarter.
  4. Other projects/assignments: There will be various other assignments given, such as group projects and individual reports.

Grades are calculated on total points earned divided by total points possible. Grades are entered regularly into the SDS system, and are available with the appropriate password.

Example:  for a quarter:

Assignments:        earned 260 out of 300 points

Lab reports:            earned 280 out of 300 points

Tests:                     earned 320 out of 400 points

Other:                     earned  40 out of  50 points

Total                      earned 900 out of 1050 points:   86% = B-

I have read and understand these expectations and the grading system.  I also acknowledge this information is posted on the school web site for my future information.
