History
1926 Fr. J.B. Culemans, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Moline, voices need for a central Catholic high school.
1931 Msgr. P.H. Durkin, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Rock Island, purchases six acres from W.L. Velie estate for $6,500.
1931-1945 The Depression followed by wartime and post-war labor and material shortages delays building of the school.
September 30, 1945 Fr. John F. Fitzpatrick, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Rock Island, signs the formal diocesan resolution requesting the establishment of Alleman Catholic High School, which will reside within the parish’s boundaries.
October 2, 1945 Bishop Schlarman approves the diocesan resolution for formation of Alleman Catholic High School. Building Fund Campaign begins across the vicariate.
1947 Msgr. Durkin picks the name “Alleman” in honor of Rev. John George Alleman, O.P., a pioneering priest and native of Alsace Lorraine, France.
August 15, 1948 Bishop Schlarman blesses and places the cornerstone.
August 28, 1949 Amieto Cardinal Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the United States, dedicates the school.
September 12, 1949 Alleman opens its doors for the first time to students. Enrollment was 571. The faculty included 4 priests, 9 BVM Sisters of Charity, 4 Franciscans, 7 Benedictines, 2 Dominicans and 4 lay personnel.
1953 Viatorian priests join staff.
1957 Eight classrooms as well as counseling offices are added. Booster Club erects Athletic Building. Capacity up to 1,200 students. Parking lot extended.
1963-65 South Wing added, which includes 14 rooms and 2 study halls.
1965 Enrollment peaks at 1,400 students.
1966 Mosaic added to west wall of newest wing. It was created by Sister Mary Alexia, OSB, and project advisor, Father George Wuellner.
1967 New chapel and a residence with 27 rooms is added. Viatorians assume responsibility for operation and administration of Alleman. Diocese retains ownership of Alleman.
1973 Faculty Advisory Council created.
1978 “A Design for Tomorrow” Capital Endowment Drive begins.
1979 Casey Gym added.
1987 Alleman receives $380,00 bequest from the estate of Fr. Francis J. Casey for it’s endowment fund, making possible numerous proejcts over the next decade.
1987 Mr. Allan Gorgal is named first lay educator to serve as Principal.
1992-97 “In Pursuit of Excellence,” the first combined capital campaign drive for all five Illinois Quad Cities Catholic Schools: Alleman, Jordan, Seton, St. Anne’s and St. Mary’s.
1998 Alleman celebrates its 50th Anniversary with the theme of “A Strong Past - A Promising Future.” Father Alleman roses are transported from St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Madison, Iowa, and St. James Church in St. Paul, Iowa, to Alleman.
1999 Gym lobby is expanded to include a commons addition. The house located just south of the student parking lot is purchased and torn down in order to expand the parking lot to 152 spaces.
2000 In August, Alleman announces the acquisition of 25 acres, located off John Deere Road, for the construction of athletic fields. In September, the lower 17 acres of the Alleman Athletic Complex, located at 1186 43rd Ave., Moline, Illinois, are developed to include two baseball diamonds, two softball diamonds, a soccer field and a practice-football field.
2000 The Dr. Tracy Spaeth ‘76 Performing Arts Center opens. The 620-seat facility also includes a basement athletic facility.
2000 The Alleman Athletic Building (“The Barn”) is torn down and the football field is expanded to regulation size.
2001 Alleman Athletic Complex officially dedicated.
2010 Main Office renovated to include a convenient outside entrance and parking.
2011 Chapel renovated and named Fr. Mirabelli Chapel in honor of his extraordinary service to the high school.
2012 Cafeteria remodeled with new ceiling, lighting and flooring. New vestibule entrance added outside the chapel.
2015 Alleman receives the largest single financial contribution in school history with a major gift from the Richard W. McCarthy Charitable Trust. The gift is utilized to implement both phases of a strategic plan Alleman formulated in 2014.
2015 Don Morris Gymnasium remodeled with new bleachers, lights, baskets, scoreboards and athletic banners. Also, sound system upgrade, floor refinishing and painting of ceiling and upper bleachers.
2018 After nearly 70 years, the football practice field behind the school becomes Alumni Field, a new multi-purpose artificial surface field to be used by a number of sports at various levels. The $600,000 cost of the project was made possible by Alleman alumni, including a generous donation from Darrel & Mary Anne ‘65 Reynolds.
